UK Minister of Trade and Irish Ambassador to the UAE visits the show

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 11 March 2010: The 12th Water Technology, Energy and Environment Exhibition 2010 – WETEX 2010 concluded today, with 60 per cent of space already booked for next year’s show.

The three-day show attracted large number of visitors who were keen to explore new technologies and solutions.

Sixty-two per cent of the participating companies said they had obtained leads that would be translated into for contracts during 2010, after participating in the show.

DEWA officials, organizers of the show, said exhibitors were very satisfied with the show which met its positioning as a platform for growing their business in the Middle East region. Also, a large number of sponsors and co-sponsors confirmed their sponsorship for next year’s edition.

This proves the significance of the show which has become an important event on Dubai’s annual calendar of events. The new solutions displayed were welcomed by visitors in the light of rapid growth of electricity, water and related industries in the Middle East

H.E Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA expressed satisfaction at the participation that exceeded all expectations, a proof of the dramatic growth of the event.

The UK Minister for Trade, Investment and Small Business, Lord Davies, who led a delegation to the show as part of his visit along with 70 British SMEs to the UAE this week, visited the venue and lauded its success. The visit was of significance especially since the UAE is the UK’s 14th biggest export market and it aims at further increasing business and partnership opportunities between both countries.

Commenting on his visit to the show and to Dubai in general, Lord Davies said: “Dubai is the natural hub for the Middle East and the UAE remains our number one trading partner across the region. At the end of last year, the UK and UAE Government’s made a commitment to increasing our bilateral trade to £12 billion by 2015, a 60 per cent increase from current levels. I hope this visit moves us a step closer to achieving our new trade targets."

The size and scope of the delegation attending WETEX shows the UK's enthusiasm for exploring new business opportunities.

Despite the challenging global economic conditions, UK exports of goods to the UAE held steady at around £3.6 billion in 2009.

Al Tayer added commenting on the UK Minister visit: “The UAE has always been a key emerging market for the UK and this reflects the already strong commercial relationship between both countries, and the excellent opportunities that the UAE has to offer. The UAE is amongst the UK's largest export market world-wide, and the largest in the Middle East region. Hundreds of UK companies are well established in Dubai serving most of the major sectors.”

Al Tayer added: “Historically the UK and the UAE have enjoyed a close and mutually beneficial relationship. Today there are over 140 direct flights between the UAE and the UK each week. We at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) would like to strengthen the investment relationship with the UK companies and are committed to keeping this relationship as relevant today as it ever was.”

DEWA’s stand as well as the green building stand which aimed at enhancing awareness in protecting the natural resources of Dubai attracted hordes of visitors.

H.E. Ambassador Ciaran Madden, Irish Ambassador to UAE also visited the show, leading a business delegation and discussed ways to enhance business relationships between DEWA and the Irish business community. The delegation also praised WETEX’s role in being a platform that brings under one roof manufacturers, decision makers, executives and clients, offering opportunities for establishing new alliances and strengthening existing business ties.

Irish companies are giving high attention to Wetex. Biggest Irish companies are keen to further enhance avenues of cooperation with DEWA.

DEWA held a gala dinner on the second day of WETEX at the Bustan Rotana, attended by Mr Al Tayer. Al Tayer and Mr. Abdullah Al Hajri, VP for customer servicing, felicitated sponsors and cosponsors of the show. Also, Mr Al Tayer honoured government organizations that participated in the show.

In the second day of WETEX 2010, and among the activities held along the exhibition, Dubai Electricity & Water Authority has celebrated the occasion of signing 6 new contracts for projects in electricity and water sectors enhancing the infrastructure of DEWA facilities, raising the efficiency of the networks to meet the growth in demand to DEWA’s services, in line with the directions of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum – Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer –MD&CEO –DEWA has signed the contracts on behalf of DEWA and its partners including contractors and senior officials in the contracting companies which were awarded the contracts for execution of those projects.

In the beginning of the celebration , HE MD&CEO spoke welcoming the guests , stating that we are pleased to welcome you in this meeting that brings us together with our partners of the contractors who cooperated with DEWA in the past years to to complete its projects in the various sectors and this event brings us together again to sign more contracts for projects in different fields.

HE pointed out that , DEWA carries out its responsibilities in accordance with the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum - Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and in line with DEWA’s strategy which is part of Dubai’s strategy , to provide a reliable infrastructure to meet the various demands of our development walk ,including electricity and water services , as these directives are being implemented under an executive methodology pursuant to the growth in demand for our services.

HE made it clear that , we are in the process of signing 6 contracts for major projects to the amount if AED 3.130 billion covering both electricity and water sectors.

The ceremonies for signing contracts started with the first contract, to supply, install, test and commissioning of three 132/11 KV Substations with AAB Industries LLC –Dubai to the amount of AED 250 Million.

The second contract with Areva T&D SA Dubai to supply , install, test and commissioning of three 132/11 KV Substations in various areas in Dubai , including Dubai Investment Park , Jebel Ali Industries Area, Mutina , Kifaf and other places , which cost is AED 1.030 Billion.

The third contract with Ducab -Dubai to supply 11 KV XLPE power cables –800kms, the value of which is AED 260 Million.

The Fourth contract to be entered with Ghantoot Gulf Contracting to supply , install, test and commissioning of Glass Reinforced Epoxy Water Transmission Pipelines and associated works at various locations in the Emirate of Dubai (167 kms) , which total cost is AED 820 Million.

The Fifth contract will be signed with M/S Saudi Modern Co. (Riyadh cables) Dubai to supply , install, test and commissioning of 132 KV cables to 132/11 KV Substations , to the value of AED 300 Million.

The sixth M/S Siemens to supply , install, test and commissioning of Mamzer Beach 400/132 KV Substations, which cost is AED 470 Million.

At the end of the celebration, HE MD& CEO emphasized the significance of completing these projects at the contractual dates, this is in order to enter them in service in the right time, assuring the guests, that DEWA will extend all possible facilities to contractors to insure the proper completion of these projects, putting the environmental considerations that are set by DEWA at the top of its priorities.

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and President of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) inaugurated today (Tuesday, March 9, 2010) the 12th Water Technology, Energy and Environment Exhibition 2010 – WETEX 2010 at Zaabeel hall of Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

After the inauguration, Sheikh Hamdan announced the start of the golden jubilee (50 years) year of DEWA.

HH Sheikh Hamdan praised the remarkable growth of DEWA which contributed in enhancing Dubai’s position on the international map by providing world class services to people and businesses in the Emirate. He also stressed maintaining the temp of launching new projects to meet the emirate’s demand for electricity and water.

HH Sheikh Hamdan, H.E. Dr. Haneef Hassan, UAE Minister of Health, H.E. Dr. Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahd – Minister of Environment &Water, H.E. Matar Humaid Al Tayer, Chairman of DEWA and H.E. Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, along with VIP guests toured the show and were briefed by participants, including ministries, municipalities, government departments and public service associations.

The show, which has attracted participation of 23 countries, emphasized on its first day on the importance of adopting best standards in reserving environment as well as discussing latest techniques in energy sectors with specialized companies from around the globe. The show has different sections for national companies and numerous Pan Arab and International companies.

H.E Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA said: "The Exhibition will discuss over three days the phenomenon of climate change and rising global temperatures, calling for the urging need to develop a new framework to combat global warming. It will also discuss ways of using "green" technology to mitigate the impact of global warming.”

Since its launch 12 years ago, WETEX has proved to be an important event on the annual calendar of companies working in the energy sector. The show is considered a value addition to the series of events hosted by Dubai throughout the year and it consolidates internationally Dubai’s position on the international map as a centre of modernization and excellence.

On day one, WETEX 2010 emphasized on the need to take serious steps to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. This stresses on the importance of quick action to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, which has increased by 40 per cent between 1990 to 2008, according to international statistics.

WETEX, the first of its kind show in the region, aims to tackle critical issues in Energy Conservation, Water and Electricity, including environmental protection and preservation. It attracts companies who are on the lookout for new technologies and solutions in this field.

The environmental impact of buildings has become a priority in the Middle East region. It is crucial to further implement sustainable and eco-friendly solutions, such as green buildings. In this respect, DEWA is hosting WETEX workshops to help senior management executives in the water, energy and environment sectors meet renowned industry experts, discuss and debate key issues, including green building and environmentally-friendly technologies, renewable energy, wastewater reuse and the future of the industry in the Middle East region.

500 companies are participating at this year’s edition of the show compared to 450 companies last year.

WETEX not only represents technologies, but also adopts and supports the issues and topics in the field of sustainable development and conservation of the environment. The Exhibition’s agenda includes discussion of issues and topics focusing on the phenomenon of climate change which is global in nature and it has crossed the borders to pose dangers to the whole world.

DEWA has dedicated national pavilions for green buildings systems and electricity and water conservation which will give specialists in this field an ideal opportunity to benefit from best of breed technologies for their projects and facilities.

The show on its first day has stressed the importance of conserving the energy resources of the Emirate for sustainable development. This goal cannot be achieved unless all community segments adopt the principles of energy conservation as their core values so that future generations will gain the maximum benefit.

WETEX focuses on showcasing the latest standards of environmental conservation for the visitors and participants. With leading regional and international participation, it also provides an opportunity to discuss the latest developments and advancements in the energy industry.

National pavilions from Italy, USA, European Union, China and Taiwan are participating in the exhibition. Al Tayer added: “This strong participation proves that Dubai is the preferred destination for all kind of businesses in the region.”

Al Tayer added: “The Symposia and lectures on the sidelines of the exhibition will cover several critical issues in areas of water and electricity generations and conservation. The programs are designed to help visitors, engineers and technicians from various government and private sectors in the region update themselves on the latest techniques and developments”.
