Enviromena Power Systems Closes Series B Financing with an Investment Consortium of Masdar, Good Energies, zouk Ventures and New Energies Invest

Abu Dhabi, UAE – January 13, 2009 – Enviromena Power Systems today announced it has closed its Series B investment round and as part of that round Masdar and Good Energies have become shareholders joining zouk Ventures and New Energies Invest. The investment totals $US 15 million in equity and equity warrants. Enviromena will use the funds to expand operations throughout the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and maintain its position as the region’s leading solar power developer.

Enviromena CEO Sami Khoreibi commented: “Enviromena is very excited to have tier one Cleantech funds like Masdar, Good Energies, zouk and New Energies be a part of our company. Institutions of this calibre investing in privately held MENA based renewable energy ventures is unique and indicative of the sector’s growth in this region.”

Dr Sultan Al Jaber, CEO, Masdar also commented explaining “Enviromena has achieved much in a short period and those achievements have earned it the attention of some of the most well respected investors in this field. We are more than happy to continue to support the company to their next stage of development both here in Abu Dhabi and beyond”.

Andrew Lee, Managing Director, Good Energies added to this remarking “We are very excited by the potential Enviromena has in the Gulf and beyond and look forward to being active participants in the growth of the company. In addition we are pleased that Good Energies is working for the first time directly in an investment with Masdar and we look forward to a continuing fruitful relationship.”

The financing round will see Masdar become the largest shareholder of Enviromena followed by Good Energies and zouk. Enviromena’s Board of Directors will reflect the new shareholder base with Masdar and Good Energies joining zouk with board representation in Enviromena.

Khoreibi commented further: “The experience and leadership of our new investors and board members solidifies Enviromena’s position as a major player in the solar industry.”

Swiss to unveil world’s first solar powered aircraft at World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi

Walter Steinmann, State Secretary of Energy and Director of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, will be a keynote speaker

The delegation attending the World Future Energy Summit from Switzerland will be unveiling the first ever solar powered aircraft. Bertrand Piccard, President and Pilot, Solar Impulse, will be exhibiting a model of the solar powered aircraft at the event later this month in Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Centre.

A Swiss pavilion will accommodate many of Switzerland’s leading renewable energy companies who will be there to showcase the latest products and solutions of the renewable energy sector.

Industry leaders including Alstom, Oerlikon Solar, and Pramac will be part of the Swiss pavilion. 3S Swiss Solar Systems together with ABB, an active player in the ambitious Desertec project, will attend the Summit and share their latest products and solutions.

World Future Energy Summit delegates to hear from South Korean Vice Minister for Trade and Energy

Almost 20 South Korean exhibitors to participate at Abu Dhabi’s World Future Energy Summit

Organisers of the World Future Energy Summit have confirmed South Korea’s future energy blueprint will be presented by Kim Young Hak, Vice Minister for Trade and Energy, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, on the first day of the event in Abu Dhabi.

The South Korean Minister has confirmed his participation in the upcoming Summit, and will be a keynote speaker in the Energy Ministers’ panel on January 18th.

Yong-Chil Chung, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea said: “Korea is emerging as a leader of green growth. We are very happy to participate in the World Future Energy Summit and hope that this event will open the door to substantial green initiatives and projects.”

The World Future Energy Summit, now in its third year, is witnessing unprecedented Korean participation with many of Korea’s leading companies including DAE Shin Demister, Jusung Engineering Co. Ltd, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, Hyundai-Kai Company, Korea Institute of Energy, Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP), and Posco Power among others.

The South Korean government is committed to securing new sources of energy, and recently announced that they will be spending 50 trillion won ($38 billion) over the next four years in a "Green New Deal". The project which is endorsed by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance includes recycling, carbon reduction, energy conservation, flood prevention, river management and maintaining forest resources. [1] This ambitious initiative is intended to spur economic growth and create more than 956,000 jobs.

South Korea is also planning to increase the proportion of power generation sourced from renewable energy from 1.0 percent presently to 1.7 percent by 2011. This target will be achieved through a five-fold increase in green energy investments by the country’s nine state-owned energy companies.[2]

The World Future Energy Summit Energy Ministers’ panel discussion will be attended by Ministers coming from developing and developed countries, to discuss the challenge of balancing energy demand and sustaining economic development versus meeting environmental realities.
